Painting Workshop in Portugal

Join renowned Canadian artists Sharon Fox Cranston and Kato Wake for an unforgettable week-long painting retreat in the breathtaking Algarve region of Portugal, near the picturesque town of Tavira. This rare opportunity allows artists to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Portugal while honing their painting skills at a private rural estate designed for creativity and relaxation.

Whether you are an intermediate painter or an experienced artist, this retreat encourages you to step outside your comfort zone and explore new techniques through playful, creative exercises. Over the course of the week, students will focus on developing their artwork by delving into essential painting principles such as composition, values, colour harmonies, simplicity, and mark making.

Each morning, participants will engage in focused lessons led by both Sharon and Kato, whose combined 60 years of teaching and artistic practice provide a unique dual perspective that fosters open discussion and effective problem-solving. Afternoons are devoted to applying the morning lessons to your personal artwork, either in the studio or plein air. During this time, you will receive gentle guidance along with one-on-one feedback to help deepen your understanding and refine your skills. The day wraps up with recap sessions, Q&A, and lively discussions aimed at enhancing the collaborative learning environment.

Artists are encouraged to experiment with their chosen medium and style, including watercolour, acrylic, or other media. A detailed supply list will be provided upon registration, and many essential materials will be included to ensure your travels are as stress-free as possible.

The venue itself is a sanctuary for creativity and relaxation. Nestled amongst trees and tropical foliage, the spacious, sunlit studio—referred to as “the dojo”—overlooks fruit orchards and offers a dedicated workspace for every participant. While studio time happens mainly in mornings and afternoons, artists have the freedom to explore the property and discover private spots perfect for sketching and painting inspiration.

The estate blends artistry with sustainability, featuring regenerative elements such as rainwater recovery systems, rammed earth construction, green energy production, and an edible forest. Each en-suite bedroom is independent, open to nature, and decorated with local materials, creating a peaceful and harmonious living environment. The terrace area, shaded by grapevines, offers communal seating and dining spaces, ideal for fostering connections among participants.

Food is an integral part of the experience. Chef Salomé will lovingly prepare tasty and nutritious vegetarian meals that nourish both body and soul. Every morning, guests enjoy a farm-to-table breakfast made from 100% organic, local ingredients—including homemade sourdough bread and produce from the estate’s permaculture vegetable garden and orchard. Throughout the day, healthy snacks, juices, water, and tea are readily available. Wine, thoughtfully selected by Billy Munnelly of www.billysbestbottles.com, complements two special dining experiences in nearby Tavira, featuring fish, meat, and vegetarian options. Food preferences and dietary needs are carefully considered to make every meal enjoyable and memorable.

The week offers more than just painting. Alongside daily lessons and studio work, the retreat includes a few well-planned excursions to nearby towns, giving artists a chance to soak in the vibrant local culture and scenery. Non-painting partners are welcome and will be provided with suggestions for exploring the charming surroundings during the day.

Participation is limited to 12 to 18 artists to maintain an intimate and supportive atmosphere. Unfortunately, complete beginners cannot be accepted, ensuring that all attendees are ready to engage deeply with the material and push their artistic boundaries.

Painting in Portugal is more than a workshop—it is a chance to recharge, ignite your passion, connect with fellow creatives, and create meaningful work in a stunning and supportive environment. Sharon and Kato’s passion for teaching and art practice converge to offer an exceptional experience that balances focused learning with relaxation, adventure, and connection. If you are an artist ready to grow, experiment, and be inspired in one of the world’s most beautiful settings, this workshop is not to be missed.

Registration is simple. Interested artists can secure their spot by contacting Kato Wake. After registering, you will receive detailed information about materials and additional logistical details to prepare for an inspiring week abroad.
